If you are at all interested in the Saskatoon music scene, chances are that you are already intimately favorite with Ominocity - the fantastic local zine ran by Ryan and Chris. This March, Ominocity will be celebrating their first anniversary with a very special one-night festival called “OMFEST” - which will be taking place at Louis’ and will feature sets from local acts like Reform Party, Shooting Guns, and We Were Lovers.
In anticipation of the show, I’ve put together a little mixtape which features tracks from all the performers at OMFEST, as well as a selection of the other amazing bands from around town. Feel free to download it by clicking the image above, or by clicking the link below:

I am off to #SBA this morning, so I thought I’d better stop procrastinating and put together this mixtape - which has been sitting on my desktop, incomplete, for ages. There are two things also I want to get across before I start scrambling to pack. First off, the art for this mix comes from a talented illustrator who goes by the name SockMonkee. His/her work is phenomenal, so check it out. Secondly, local superstar Ms. Jeans Boots is going to blow up; there is just no two ways about it. If you haven’t listened to her stuff yet, don’t sleep on it. Happy trails!

A few random facts: 1) The photo this mix’s cover is based on is from a talented photographer named Erwin Olaf. 2) ‘Moonwalking With Einstein’ by Josh Foer and ‘Ready Player One’ by Ernest Cline are amazing books. If you consider yourself even mildly geeky, check’em out. 3) There is always a new music “drought” around the new year. 4) The world needs more spontaneous high-fives.

Everyone around town keeps glancing at the forecast wondering how long our good fortune is going to last - but you know deep-down everyone wants a white Christmas. Hooray global warming?

10. Kidstreet - XA week back I read a fascinating story in Wired about a whiskey fungus that was overtaking a small brewing town in Northern Ontario. In it, a young mycology post-doc named James Scott was tasked with figuring out just what was causing this mysterious black spores from enveloping the town. He concluded that the spores were caused byThe Angels’ Share - a term given to the evaporation that happens when distilling spirit,s which causes a fungus to form out of the invisible vapors. This process or phenomenon, was coined in the early 19th century by distillers that didn’t readily have an explanation for the evaporation, it was simply attributed to the divine, or the cost paid to the ”angels” for producing the drink. In turn, this got me thinking about music. Much like the distillers of old, we don’t really attribute anything to making a track “click” with us other then chance or discovery. Perhaps there is another more scientific reason, but ultimately, does it even matter? If a piece of music makes you shake your hips or tap your toes isn’t that good enough? Chalk it up to the divine.

Still buzzing off the mental high of Barcamp Saskatoon, the grand opening of The Two Twenty, and the projects on the go at IdeasClub, I’ve been giving a lot of thought to the notion of “makers”. To quote Grace Bonney over at DesignSponge: “As designers and artists set out on their own to start their own businesses, they’re using all sorts of skills and testing the waters of different media and disciplines. What I used to see as a slackery unwillingness to commit now feels like a thoroughly modern and accurate way to describe someone who is committed to working with his or her hands, in whatever form or style that takes.” This idea really hits home for me - it’s no longer the mastery of the tool set outlined in your job description that defines your growth, but rather working by hand in any medium that excites you. For me, making mixtapes is such a small part of the puzzle.

@dejong: The Best of October 2011 Mixtape

Some part of me loves the familiarity & sense of ease that comes from knowing your way around a town, or knowing what to expect around every corner. On the other hand, there is a whole lot of world let out there to discover, so why not step out of my comfort zone and go exploring. The mixes artwork stems from the wonderful and inspiring blog 4CP - so much nifty detail in the stuff they post.

As a rule of thumb I tend to believe normal people and relationships are a volatile combination, no matter how they appear on the surface. In other news, here are eleven fresh jams for ya - concocted while I shuffle between endless airport departures terminals. If you’re wondering where this mixtape’s art came from, it is supposedly the teaser poster for the upcoming Steven Soderbergh flick ‘Haywire’.

I love to go running after work, but as fall creeps in I am finding that I have less and less time between when I punch out and when the sun goes down and it becomes unbearably chilly. This means I am counting it with increasingly sunny running mixes, but I’m not sure what sure how long it is going to last. Anyhow, this mix represents is the current iteration of my running playlist over the past week or so. PS. Artwork shamelessly pinched from the incredibly talented Marius Roosendaal.
